The Niagara Health System (NHS) is Ontario’s largest hospital amalgamation comprised of six acute-care hospital sites serving 434,000 residents across the 12 municipalities making up the Regional Municipality of Niagara.


The NHS consists of three large community hospitals -- Greater Niagara General Site in Niagara Falls, St. Catharines Site (new in 2013) and the Welland Hospital Site-- and three small hospitals -- Douglas Memorial Hospital Site in Fort Erie, Niagara-on-the-Lake Hospital Site, and Port Colborne General Site.

St. Catharines - New health-care complex (2013) and Walker Family Cancer Centre

Functions as an acute-care community hospital, serving residents of St. Catharines, Thorold, Niagara-on-the-Lake and surrounding communities

  • Increased capacity for up to 375 beds, with a projected 2,005,160 outpatients, inpatients and day cases each year

  • Acute and critical inpatient services, surgical, emergency and ambulatory services are available under one roof

  • Accommodates regional programs in Niagara, including:

    • Comprehensive cancer care at the Walker Family Cancer Centre

    • Cardiac Catheterization services at the Heart Investigation Unit

    • Longer-term mental health beds (53)

  • Hub of regional dialysis services, supported by the permanent dialysis unit recently constructed in Welland and being planned for in Niagara Falls

  • Cardiologists read Echocardiography


Ancillary Staff:

  • Fully trained nursing and clinic staff

  • 5 General Surgeons, 5 Urologists, 6 ObGyn, 6 Orthopaedic Surgeons, 8 Radiologists

  • Fully equipped PACS Imaging Department, including MRI, CT, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, Mammography, Bone Mineral Densitometry


Academic Affiliations:

Since its founding in 1966, innovation has been the hallmark of McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine and a major contributor to its international reputation for excellence.. For five years in a row, McMaster has ranked second in Canada for biomedical and health care research revenues with much of that research conducted by scientists and physicians who teach in the medical school.


The medical school has expanded to a regional campus in Niagara, which is located at Brock University. Students at the Niagara Regional Campus complete their clinical rotations in one of the six area hospitals with teaching done by the highly skilled and motivated hospital physicians.


Opportunities for strengthening and building strong academic partnerships will are a priority for the NHS as the hospital has expanded into this new facility. We are interested in Physicians who will pursue a university faculty appointment and participate in academic activities within a strong regional community hospital setting.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements: Royal College Certification

Licensing Requirements: Eligible for Independent License with College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario
