PALLIATIVE CARE LEAD



 


NIAGARAHEALTH SYSTEM


Based at Walker Family Cancer Centre (WFCC)


 


The Niagara Health System (NHS) is Ontario’s largest hospital amalgamation comprised of six acute-care hospital sites serving 434,000 residents across the 12 municipalities making up the Regional Municipality of Niagara.


 


The NHS consists of three large community hospitals -- Greater Niagara General Site in Niagara Falls, St. Catharines Site (new in 2013) and the Welland Hospital Site-- and three small hospitals -- Douglas Memorial Hospital Site in Fort Erie, Niagara-on-the-Lake Hospital Site, and Port Colborne General Site.


 


This role is designed to provide leadership in Palliative Care within the Niagara region by implementing a coordinated system of palliative care services, complementing and augmenting existing local resources.  The Physician Leader for Palliative Care will provide strategic leadership for the clinical services and academic/research development of the palliative care program at the WFCC.  The overarching aim for this role is to improve the overall quality of palliative care for patients in the Niagara region.


 


ROLE




  • Develop, direct, evaluate, and maintain a program in palliative care at WFCC that is consistent with the goals and strategic directions of CCO and the Regional Oncology Program.


  • Participate as a member of the Department of Oncology.


  • Work collaboratively with the systemic, radiation, and surgical oncologists in the Outpatient Oncology Clinic / WFCC providing expert consultation in the control of systems related to malignant disease and its treatment.


  • Provide clinical care in the Outpatient Oncology Clinic / WFCC.


  • Provide clinical care for oncology inpatients at the St. Catharines Site of the NHS


  • Support Hospitalists in the care of non-oncology palliative patients if feasible


  • Develop an on-call rotation and provide coverage for planned absences.


  • Participate in relevant regional meetings and rounds.



 


Academic


 




  • Participate in undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education appropriate to the NHS mission.



 


Research


 




  • Develop and implement a research program for Oncology Palliative care.



 


Qualifications


 




  • Eligibility for Independent licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.


  • Member of the CFPC or of the RCOSC (or equivalent).


  • Fellowship in Palliative Care would be an asset.


  • Demonstrated clinical abilities and experience in palliative care.


  • Demonstrated administrative abilities and leadership skills.


  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.


  • Demonstrated achievement in research, clinical investigation, or professional education.
