The Niagara Health System (NHS) is Ontario’s largest hospital amalgamation comprised of six acute-care hospital sites serving 434,000 residents across the 12 municipalities making up the Regional Municipality of Niagara.


The NHS consists of three large community hospitals -- Greater Niagara General Site in Niagara Falls, St. Catharines Site (new in 2013) and the Welland Hospital Site-- and three small hospitals -- Douglas Memorial Hospital Site in Fort Erie, Niagara-on-the-Lake Hospital Site, and Port Colborne General Site.





St. Catharines - catchment population – 155,000


The new St. Catharines Hospital opened on March 24, 2013. The full service hospital includes a cancer Center, cardiac catheterization lab.  The Mental Health and Addictions Program, is the largest clinical program. The state of the art Mental Health units has 80% private rooms, home-like lounge areas with fireplaces, outdoor courtyards, and a large therapeutic programming area that includes a Snoezelen Multi-Sensory Room and a gym. The Mental Health and Addictions Program consists of:

  • 44 Acute Care Beds

  • 3 Psychiatric Intensive Care Beds

  • 22 Specialized Care Beds

  • 2 Transition to Independent Living Beds

  • 4 Beds in the Psychiatric Emergency Service

  • Telemedicine Crisis Services

  • 4 Child/Adolescent Mental Health Beds

  • Community Treatment Order Program

  • ECT Program

  • Consultation Liaison Service

  • Acute and Specialized Outpatient Clinics

  • Psychogeriatric Clinic

  • Child/Adolescent Outpatient Clinic

  • Medication Clinic

  • Outreach Consultation Service

  • Assertive Community Treatment Teams

Academic Affiliations:

Since its founding in 1966, innovation has been the hallmark of McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine and a major contributor to its international reputation for excellence. McMaster University’s School of Medicine has gained international recognition for groundbreaking medical and health science research. For five years in a row, McMaster has ranked second in Canada for biomedical and health care research revenues with much of that research conducted by scientists and physicians who teach in the medical school.


The medical school has expanded to a regional campus in Niagara, which is located at Brock University. Students at the Niagara Regional Campus complete their clinical rotations in one of the seven area hospitals with teaching done by the highly skilled and motivated hospital physicians.


Opportunities for strengthening and building strong academic partnerships will are a priority for the NHS as the hospital has expanded into this new facility. We are interested in Physicians who will pursue a university faculty appointment and participate in academic activities within a strong regional community hospital setting.


Current group:

  • 8 Adult Psychiatrists

  • The existing compliment of psychiatrists practice General Psychiatry and C & A Psychiatry

  • The NHS is interested in psychiatrists who want to work in all Mental Health and Addiction Program services


  • 1 in 8 – take one full week at a time

  • Regional on call for weekends, possibly 1 in 10 anticipated


  • General Psychiatry – primarily adult

  • Day Treatment and Outreach Programs

  • Child and Adolescent Psychiatry available

  • 7-10 day patients

Ancillary Staff:

  • Full service community general hospital

  • Inter-professional staff consisting of nursing, social work, occupational therapy, spiritual care, and recreational therapy


  • Hospital provides office space

  • Secretarial support

  • Compensation is a combination of sessional fees for non-direct care and Ontario Health Plan billing for direct care

  • Opportunity for further contract/agency work

Specialized Care:  

The Specialized Mental Health Service is new to NHS as of March 2013. The Niagara Health System continues to collaborate with St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton to coordinate services for complex, specialized care patients i.e. Psychogeriatrics..

  • Eligibility for Ontario licence and billing number
