The Niagara Health System (NHS) is Ontario’s largest hospital amalgamation comprised of six acute-care hospital sites serving 434,000 residents across the 12 municipalities making up the Regional Municipality of Niagara.


 


The NHS consists of three large community hospitals -- Greater Niagara General Site in Niagara Falls, St. Catharines Site (new in 2013) and the Welland Hospital Site-- and three small hospitals -- Douglas Memorial Hospital Site in Fort Erie, Niagara-on-the-Lake Hospital Site, and Port Colborne General Site.

Hospitalist Program Description


 




The goal of the NHS Hospitalist program is to provide a patient/family-centered model of quality care from admission to discharge using a interprofessional approach.



Programs are based out of St. Catharines, Welland and Niagara Falls Site.



 




Program Description:


           





  • Inpatient program support to:


    1. Unassigned Medical,


    2. “ER admit no bed”,


    3. Appropriate transfers from other services,




  • Each Hospitalist will provide care for approximately 20 acute patients a day.


  • Hospitalist will rotate on call; with one in five weekday call, and one weekend in five with an opportunity to do extra locum work if desired.


  • Some Family Physicians continue to provide care for their own patients.  The NHS Hospitalist program will support this decision and there may continue to be physicians who volunteer for on-call for the Hospitalist program.


  • An Extended Class Nurse Practitioner participates in the Program on the Complex Continuing Care Units.



 




Practice:


 





  • Considered “independent contractors” practicing the profession of medicine.


  • Hospitalist will enter into a per diem arrangement for their services.



 




Equipment and Office Setup:


 





  • Shared office with additional rooms for assessments


    • Desk, chairs, computers/software, etc.


    • Clerical Support





 




Qualifications Required:





  • Licensed, or eligible for license with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Ontario


  • ACLS certification, or intent to complete



 




Tertiary Care:





  • Hamilton Health Sciences


  • 1 hour away

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements: Royal College Certification or CCFP

Licensing Requirements: Eligible for Independent License with College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario

Visa Requirements: Able to work in Canada without restrictions

Compensation: Fee for Service
